Designing Scalable UX for a Regulated Financial Platform
Monorail is a Hitachi Client partner and a regulated fintech platform focused on long-term investing, portfolio transparency, and operational trust. I led UX strategy across multiple core initiatives including onboarding, portfolio analysis, stablecoin wallet integration, gamification systems, and a Flutter-ready design system.
The work required translating complex financial workflows, compliance requirements, and technical infrastructure into intuitive user experiences that could scale across mobile and web platforms. I partnered directly with executives, engineering, product, and compliance stakeholders to modernize the platform while improving usability, engagement, and operational consistency.
The Challenge
Monorail operated within a highly constrained environment where UX decisions impacted compliance, trust, scalability, onboarding conversion, and long-term product maintainability.
The platform contained multiple interconnected systems:
- external financial account connections
- portfolio analysis workflows
- stablecoin wallet integrations
- onboarding and activation flows
- compliance-aware engagement systems
- cross-platform design infrastructure
The challenge was not simply visual redesign. The challenge was designing operational clarity across technically complex workflows while balancing:
- regulatory constraints
- engineering realities
- mobile platform limitations
- large financial datasets
- behavioral risk considerations
- long-term system scalability
Portfolio Analysis & Decision Support
Investment Analyzer

Investment Analyzer
Led UX strategy for a scalable portfolio analysis platform enabling users to securely connect external brokerage accounts and evaluate holdings through a structured impact assessment system.
Key UX challenges included:
- simplifying large financial datasets
- designing progressive disclosure patterns
- reducing cognitive overload on mobile
- creating inspectable workflows users could trust
- balancing conversion with compliance constraints
Solutions included:
- scalable filtering and navigation systems
- drill-down inspection flows
- contextual tooltips and transparency patterns
- sticky workflow guidance
- reusable analyzer architecture supporting future scoring updates

With the user's outside holdings portfolio connected, the Monorail app can easily ask if the user would like to transfer to Monorail
Behavioral Systems & User Activation
Activation & Engagement Systems

Activation & Engagement Systems
Led the redesign of Monorail’s onboarding and activation experience using compliant behavioral design systems intended to improve clarity, reduce drop-off, and guide long-term user engagement.
Rather than using urgency-driven mechanics common in consumer fintech, the system focused on:
- transparent progression
- trust-building interactions
- milestone visibility
- service-based rewards
- responsible financial behavior
The framework required close coordination with compliance stakeholders to ensure engagement patterns aligned with regulatory expectations while remaining scalable across future product flows.

SYSTEMS DESIGN & PLATFORM SCALABILITY
Flutter-Ready Design System

Flutter-Ready Design System
Defined and implemented a token-based design system supporting scalable product development across Monorail’s mobile and web experiences.
The system standardized:
- typography
- spacing
- layout structures
- reusable components
- interaction states
- light/dark themes
- engineering handoff patterns
I collaborated closely with engineering teams to ensure the system aligned with Flutter implementation requirements, reducing design debt, improving development velocity, and enabling scalable feature expansion across the platform.
